AstraZeneca Healthy Hearts Africa: simultaneous brand awareness across nine markets

How Newmark managed intelligence, strategy, and communications for AstraZeneca's Healthy Hearts Africa programme across nine African markets simultaneously.

Managing a pan-African communications programme across nine markets simultaneously is not a coordination challenge. It is an intelligence challenge. The coordination — managing timelines, aligning messaging, synchronising activations — is tractable. The intelligence challenge — understanding how the same brand message needs to be expressed differently in Nairobi and Dakar and Lagos and Addis Ababa — is where most global programmes fall short.

AstraZeneca's Healthy Hearts Africa programme was designed to build cardiovascular health awareness and stakeholder engagement across Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, Rwanda, and Nigeria simultaneously. Each market presented a different healthcare system, a different media landscape, a different set of clinical opinion leaders, and a different patient community culture. The programme needed to be genuinely effective in each of these environments — not just broadly present across all of them.

Newmark began with the Field Intelligence System (FIS™) — mapping the formal and informal health communication landscape in each market before a single piece of content was produced. Healthcare professional networks, patient advocacy groups, regulatory pathways, and media relationships were documented in each country. This intelligence revealed the market-specific adaptations required: in some markets, healthcare professional engagement was the priority channel; in others, patient community networks were more influential; in others, government health authority relationships were the determining factor.

“Genuine pan-African presence requires genuine pan-African intelligence.”

The programme design built these adaptations into the execution architecture from the outset. Market-specific communications plans were developed for each country, informed by the intelligence gathered. A strategic oversight framework ensured that the brand narrative remained coherent across all nine markets while allowing each market's execution to be genuinely calibrated to its specific environment. The result was a programme that operated simultaneously at pan-African scale and at local market depth.

The Healthy Hearts Africa programme demonstrated a principle that governs all of Newmark's pan-African work: genuine pan-African presence requires genuine pan-African intelligence. Brands that apply a single template across African markets are not operating at pan-African scale — they are operating at the scale of their own assumptions about Africa. The continent is too diverse, too complex, and too important to be approached with anything less than market-by-market intelligence and market-by-market execution.
